Do you remember how much fun it was to colour as a child? You don’t need to be a child to enjoy colouring. Colouring has actually increased in popularity for adults because there are so many benefits.

I find it a workout for my dexterity, fine motor skills and concentration. Colouring can help improve mindfulness. It can improve focus and helps you to stay in the moment.

Colouring helps you to use parts of the brain that require concentration and fine motor skills. You actually have to tell your hand what to do. While colouring you use the parts of your brain that enhance concentration and focus. It allows us to let go of any stressors and focus on the moment.

Colouring is a great stress reliever. It helps to calm the brain and let’s the body relax. It can actually improve sleep, help with fatigue, lower heart rate, regulate respiration and help relieve anxiety and depression.

It’s nice because there is no right or wrong way to colour. Colour for as long, or little as you like. Come back to the picture if you can’t finish it. There is a reason colouring has gained popularity for adults. It’s an activity you can do by yourself, with little investment.

So the next time your world is feeling a little out of control, and you’re feeling the stress of the everyday, grab a colouring book, and some coloured pencils, and be a kid again… if only for a little while.
